Tim Wagner is a rising executive at Fender Financial, working towards a promotion that he believes will give him the career boost he needs to achieve his dreams. However, he is surprised to learn that his boss, Lance Fender, hosts a monthly dinner in which each guest brings a quirky and socially awkward individual, called a "schmuck", to be ridiculed by the others. The guest who brings the biggest buffoon is rewarded with a promotion.
Initially appalled by the idea, Tim decides not to attend the dinner until he meets Barry Speck, a taxidermist who builds elaborate dioramas using stuffed mice. Barry's naïve but well-intentioned personality and his exceptional talent at creating unique dioramas convinces Tim that he has found a potential winner for the dinner. Despite his better judgment, Tim invites Barry to the dinner, hoping to secure his promotion.
Once at the dinner, Tim and his colleagues are amused at Barry's antics as he accidentally sets fire to the table, unknowingly insults a blind guest, and ruins Tim's chances of closing a major business deal. As the night progresses, Tim realizes that the whole event is inhumane and he no longer wants anything to do with it. However, Lance recognizes Barry's talent and offers him a job, derailing Tim's promotion and jeopardizing his relationship with his fiancée.
As Tim tries to clean up the mess Barry has left in his life, he begins to see the value in Barry's unique perspective and his ability to challenge him to rethink his priorities. In the end, Tim must make a difficult decision about what is most important in his life: his career ambitions or his relationships and integrity. The lesson he learns from the experience will change his life forever.
