The journalist, Cooper, suffers from memory loss after being hit on the head during a mugging in Chicago. He decides to take a break from his job, and goes back to his rural hometown. There, he reunites with his uncle Rollie, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Rollie is a former baseball player and collector of rare baseball cards.
Cooper becomes interested in his uncle's collection and decides to take him to a baseball card convention in St. Louis. They are joined on the trip by Charlotte, Cooper's old flame and a caregiver for the elderly. The trio embark on a road trip and along the way, they face a series of misadventures as Cooper struggles with his memory loss and Rollie's condition worsens.
Despite the challenges they face, Cooper and Rollie share a deep bond as they reminisce about their shared love for baseball. Rollie's rare baseball cards become the centerpiece of the story, with Cooper and Charlotte helping Rollie to sell them in order to pay for his care.
Throughout the film, Cooper confronts his own identity crisis as he comes to terms with his memory loss and uncertain future. However, the movie ultimately ends on a positive note, with Cooper rediscovering his love for his family and hometown, and Rollie finding peace in the memories he has left.
