Gabriel Caine (played by James Woods) is a smooth-talking con man who has just been released from prison. Looking for his next scheme, he stakes out the small town of Diggstown, where boxing is everything. The town's wealthiest citizen, John Gillon (played by Bruce Dern), runs a boxing racket that has everyone in town under his thumb. Gabriel sees an opportunity to make some quick cash and challenges Gillon to a bet.
The bet is this: Gabriel will find a boxer who can knock out ten of Diggstown's best fighters in one day. If he succeeds, Gillon will pay him $100,000. But if he fails, Gabriel will have to do three years in prison. With no money, no prospects, and no time to waste, Gabriel enlists the help of Honey Roy Palmer (played by Louis Gossett Jr.), a retired boxer living in a nearby nursing home.
Roy is reluctant at first, but after Gabriel tells him that the money will go to his old pal's widow, he agrees to take the challenge. And so begins a wild ride as Gabriel and Roy navigate the treacherous waters of Diggstown's boxing scene, outwitting Gillon and his minions at every turn.
The film is a classic underdog story, as the aging Roy proves that he still has what it takes to be a champion. It's a humorous and thrilling ride, full of twists and turns that keep the audience guessing until the very end. With dynamic performances from Woods and Gossett Jr., Diggstown is a must-see for any fan of boxing movies or classic con-man tales.
