Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge is a 1924 German silent film, directed by Fritz Lang. It is the second part of his Nibelungen series, following the 1924 film, Die Nibelungen: Siegfried. The film is based on the epic poem Nibelungenlied and tells the story of Kriemhild, who seeks revenge on the Burgundians for the death of her husband, Siegfried.
After Siegfried's death, Kriemhild marries the powerful Hunnish king, Etzel, and invites her brothers and their court to visit her in Hungary. Upon their arrival, Kriemhild plots to take her revenge on Hagen, the chief conspirator in Siegfried's death. She offers hospitality to her guests, but secretly arranges for Hagen to be slain. The Burgundians, unaware of her true intentions, enter the fortress and are ambushed by the Huns. In the ensuing battle, most of the Burgundians are killed, including Kriemhild's own brothers.
The film is renowned for its stunning visual effects, elaborate costumes, and elaborate sets. It also explores themes of love and revenge and has been interpreted as a critique of Germany's militarism and nationalism during the years leading up to World War II. Despite its artistic success, the film was a commercial failure, and Lang was forced to cut down the original five-hour running time to just over two hours for its release.
