Diane

Drama  United States of America

Diane is a character-driven drama film written and directed by Kent Jones. The story revolves around Diane (Mary Kay Place), a widowed mother in her late 60s, who spends her days caring for her sick cousin, volunteering at her local church, and visiting her drug-addicted son, Brian (Jake Lacy), in rehab. As she goes about her daily routines, she is haunted by memories of her past and troubled by the choices she made.

Diane's relationships with her family and friends are complicated. Her son, Brian, has been in and out of rehab for years, and she struggles with guilt over his addiction. She also has a strained relationship with her brother (Scott Shepherd), who resents her for the attention she gives to Brian. Meanwhile, she tries to reconnect with her old friend, Bobbie (Andrea Martin), who is battling cancer, but Bobbie rejects her attempts to reach out.

Throughout the film, Diane grapples with the challenges of aging, loss, and regret. She reflects on her past mistakes, including a secret affair, and seeks redemption through acts of kindness and charity. As she faces the possibility of losing those closest to her, Diane learns to confront her own mortality and find peace in the present.

The film features a strong lead performance by Mary Kay Place, who brings depth and nuance to Diane's complex character. The supporting cast, including Jake Lacy and Andrea Martin, also deliver strong performances. The film was well-received by critics and won several awards, including the Best Narrative Feature award at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.
