Devdas

Drama,Romance  India

Devdas is a 2002 Indian romantic drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and is based on the 1917 Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel of the same name. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit in lead roles.

The film is set in the early 1900s in the Bengal region of India. Devdas Mukherjee (Shah Rukh Khan) is a wealthy, privileged man from a respected family. He is in love with his childhood friend, Parvati "Paro" Chakraborty (Aishwarya Rai), but due to her lower social status, their families cannot agree to their marriage. Paro's mother forces her to marry a wealthy widower, Bhuvan Choudhary, instead.

Devdas is devastated by the loss of Paro and turns to alcohol and prostitutes to distract himself. He becomes involved with a courtesan named Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). Though she is deeply in love with him, Devdas cannot shake his feelings for Paro and hovers between the two women.

In the end, Devdas's drinking and self-destructive behavior lead to his demise. Paro rushes to his side to try and save him, while Chandramukhi looks on from afar. Devdas dies in Paro's arms.

The film was praised for its lavish sets, costumes, and cinematography, as well as the performances of its lead actors. It was India's official entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but it did not make the nominations. The film became a huge commercial success and is still considered one of the most iconic Bollywood movies of all time.
