Destiny: The Tale of Kamakura is a Japanese fantasy film directed by Takashi Yamazaki and released in 2017. The film is based on a manga by the same name written and illustrated by Ryohei Saigan.
The movie is set in an alternate universe where Kamakura is a lively town where magical creatures exist alongside humans. Akiko (Mitsuki Takahata) is a cheerful publishing assistant who falls in love with Masakazu (Masato Sakai), a popular mystery writer. After getting married, they move to Kamakura.
The town is full of strange and fantastical creatures such as kappa, tengu, and kitsune. Akiko is fascinated by the new surroundings and often goes on strolls to get familiar with the fantastical creatures. Despite the quirks, Akiko quickly makes friends with the beings that inhabit the town.
Soon after their move, tragedy strikes when Akiko dies in a minor accident. Convinced that her destiny has not been fulfilled, Masakazu goes on a quest to the underworld to bring back Akiko's spirit. He is accompanied by Ushiwakamaru (Min Tanaka), a sort of spirit guide with knowledge of the underworld.
In the underworld, Masakazu encounters several dangerous obstacles, including a demoness who seeks to keep Akiko's spirit for herself. Masakazu battles her and with the help of Ushiwakamaru, retrieves Akiko's spirit and brings her back to the world of the living.
Once reunited, Masakazu learns that Akiko carries a dark secret. However, the couple resolves to face their individual and collective troubles with each other's support.
