Lost Connections: A Parent's Last Hope

Desterro is a Brazilian drama film directed by Maria Clara Escobar and released in 2019. The story revolves around a couple named Laura and Israël, who live in an apartment in Rio de Janeiro with their young son, Lucas. Laura is a successful lawyer who is always busy with her work, whereas Israël is a struggling writer who spends most of his time at home taking care of Lucas.

As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Laura and Israël have grown distant from each other, and their relationship is in trouble. They hardly talk or spend time together, and even when they do, their conversations are strained and awkward. Israël resents Laura for not valuing his work as a writer, while Laura feels suffocated by Israël's constant presence and lack of ambition.

Meanwhile, Lucas is a curious and imaginative child who is always asking questions and exploring the world around him. He has a playful relationship with both his parents, but he seems to be the only one who is still seeking meaning and purpose in life.

One day, Laura comes across a job opportunity in Lisbon, Portugal, and she decides to take it. She offers to take Lucas with her, but Israël refuses to let his son go. This leads to a heated argument between the couple, and they both realize that their relationship is beyond repair.

In the end, Laura and Lucas leave for Lisbon, leaving Israël behind to come to terms with his life and his choices. The film ends on a bittersweet note, with the characters' future uncertain but full of possibility.
