The Cyber Genius: Challenging TV's Research Minds

Comedy,Romance  United States of America

Desk Set is a 1957 romantic comedy film directed by Walter Lang and starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. The plot follows the story of Richard Sumner (Tracy), a computer engineer who is hired by a television network to introduce an electronic brain that can replace the entire research staff. However, the confident Sumner soon finds that the head of research, Bunny Watson (Hepburn), is not entirely convinced by the new technology and is determined to prove to Sumner that a computer cannot replace human intuition and creativity.

As Sumner and Bunny engage in a battle of wits, the two start to develop a romantic relationship. Sumner also discovers that much of the information gathered by the computer is not entirely accurate, causing chaos in the network's production of a live television show. The climax of the film involves a power outage that shuts down the computer, causing the researchers to step in and fill the void.

Desk Set explores the question of whether technology can completely replace human beings in the workplace and whether the increasing reliance on automation could lead to a decrease in the importance of the human touch in society. Tracy and Hepburn's chemistry and witty dialogue make the film a delightful showcase for the duo's talents and an entertaining look at the role of technology in the workplace.
