"Designing Woman" is a romantic comedy movie that was released in 1957 and was directed by Vincente Minnelli. It stars Gregory Peck as Mike Hagen, a hardworking sportswriter, and Lauren Bacall as Marilla Brown, a successful fashion designer.
Mike and Marilla meet in California after a quick spur of the moment courthouse marriage. However, once they both arrive in New York, they soon realize that they have very little in common. While Mike is content to spend his evenings at a bar with his journalist buddies, Marilla is used to frequent attendance at high society events. Their conflicting lifestyles and interests lead to several arguments - as they both seek to understand the other's world.
Adding to the tension in their relationship is jealousy of each other's past romances. Mike is suspicious of a former boyfriend of Marilla, an Italian tennis star. Similarly, Marilla harbors feelings of envy when she learns of a former lover of Mike's, a Broadway dancer.
As their marriage struggles, they begin to push each other away, leading to moments of insecurity and doubt. However, their love for each other is strong, and with the help of their respective friends, they eventually come to an understanding of one another. They finally come to appreciate each other's unique qualities and actually begin to enjoy the different aspects of their daily routine in New York, and in the end, they live happily ever after.
The movie was a critical and commercial success due to the excellent performances of both Peck and Bacall. The film was noticeable for its focus on fashion and interior design as well, and the couple's glamorous, luxurious lifestyle was a hit with audiences.
