Desert Dancer is a biographical drama film that was released in 2014. It is based on the true story of Afshin Ghaffarian, who was born in Iran and dreamed of becoming a dancer from a young age. However, dance was banned in Iran after the Islamic Revolution, and Afshin's dream seemed impossible.
Despite this, Afshin continued to pursue his love for dance in secret, practicing on rooftops and in basements with a small group of friends who shared his passion. They formed an underground dance company and performed in secret, risking arrest and punishment from the authorities.
As Afshin became more determined to follow his dream, he decided to leave Iran and move to France to study dance. However, this meant leaving his friends and family behind, and his decision came with great risk.
The movie follows Afshin's journey as he takes the brave step to leave his country and overcome the challenges he faces as a dancer in a foreign land. It also sheds light on the political and social climate in Iran during that time, as well as the power of art and expression in bringing people together.
Desert Dancer stars Reece Ritchie as Afshin Ghaffarian, along with Freida Pinto, Tom Cullen and Nazanin Boniadi. It was directed by Richard Raymond and produced by Pathé, a British film production company.
