De-Lovely is a musical biopic released in 2004, directed by Irwin Winkler and starring Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd as Cole Porter and his wife Linda, respectively. The film follows the life of the famous composer Cole Porter, from his early career on Broadway to his success as a composer in Hollywood.
The story is told through a series of flashbacks, as an elderly Porter reflects on his life to a mysterious figure who seems to be Death. The musical numbers are integrated into the story, featuring popular songs from Porter's extensive repertoire, such as "Night and Day," "Anything Goes," and "Just One of Those Things."
The film explores Porter's unconventional personal life, including his bisexuality and his fraught relationship with Linda, who often struggled with his infidelity. Despite their difficulties, Linda remained a constant source of inspiration for Porter, who dedicated many of his songs to her and considered her his greatest love.
De-Lovely received mixed reviews upon its release but was praised for its performances and the stylish direction. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Original Song and Best Costume Design.
