Defending Your Life is a 1991 romantic comedy-fantasy film directed by and starring Albert Brooks, alongside Meryl Streep. The story is set in the afterlife, where people who have recently died are transported to a purgatory-like place called Judgment City.
Judgment City is a place where individuals are judged based on how they lived their lives on Earth. They attend “trials” that are essentially court hearings which determine whether they were brave or cowardly in their past life decisions. If they are deemed brave, they may move on to the next phase of the afterlife, but if they are deemed cowardly, they are sent back to Earth to try again.
The protagonist, Daniel Miller (Albert Brooks), is a successful advertising executive who dies suddenly in a car accident. When he arrives in Judgment City, he is assigned a defense lawyer for his trial, played by Rip Torn. Through a series of flashbacks, Daniel must prove his worth to the judges and jury by demonstrating that he has shown courage in his life.
During his trial, Daniel meets Julia (Meryl Streep), another recently deceased person in Judgment City who is also on trial. The two develop a romantic relationship, but Daniel is hesitant to pursue it since he fears that if he fails in his trial, he will be sent back to Earth without her.
As Daniel’s trial progresses, he comes to realize that he has been living his life out of fear, rather than courage. He learns to overcome his fears and starts to enjoy life more fully. In the end, Daniel’s trial is a success, and he is allowed to move on to the next phase of the afterlife with Julia.
Defending Your Life is a humorous and light-hearted examination of the meaning of life and the fear of death. It received positive reviews for its originality and Brooks’ comedic talents.
