Deep Rising is a 1998 American action horror film directed by Stephen Sommers. The movie takes place on a luxury cruise ship called the Argonautica that sets sail from Honolulu and is headed towards its destination in New York City. The ship's passengers include wealthy businessmen and their families, as well as criminals planning to rob the ship's vault of millions in cash and gems.
As the hijackers board the Argonautica and begin to take control of the ship, they are ambushed by a group of large, tentacled sea creatures that have invaded the vessel. The sea creatures are revealed to be genetically evolved giant squid is able to dissolve flesh. They immediately attack and kill the hijackers, leaving only a few survivors who team up with the ship's captain, Finnegan, played by Treat Williams.
Finnegan and the survivors try to find a way off the sinking ship while dodging the creatures' attacks and searching for any means of communication to call for help. Along the way, they discover that the sea creatures are not only present on the ship but also in the ocean and have been responsible for several disappearances in the area.
As the ship continues to sink, the group encounters another group of survivors, including the ship's owner and a thief who tries to double-cross Finnegan. With time running out, they are forced to work together to find a way to escape the creatures and make it to the surface alive.
The film features intense action sequences, graphic violence, and special effects. It received mixed reviews upon its release but has since gained a cult following for its unique premise and over-the-top action scenes.
