In the movie, the seven-mile-wide space rock is discovered by a young astronomer named Leo Biederman, played by actor Elijah Wood. As the world watches in horror, it becomes clear that the comet will hit the Earth with catastrophic force, causing a mass extinction event.
The President of the United States, played by actor Morgan Freeman, takes charge and decides to launch a mission to destroy the comet before it reaches Earth. He appoints Captain Spurgeon "Fish" Tanner, played by actor Robert Duvall, to lead the mission.
Captain Tanner puts together a team of American and Russian astronauts who travel to the comet in a specially designed spaceship armed with nuclear missiles.
