The movie Death Race is set in the year 2020 on Terminal Island, an offshore prison where inmates are subjected to the brutal and deadly spectacle of a racing competition known as the "Death Race". The Weyland Corporation, which now owns the prison, broadcasts the race live to a global audience, turning the inmates into unwilling celebrities.
The main protagonist of the story is Jensen Ames, a former race car driver who is framed for murdering his wife and sent to Terminal Island. He is forced to take part in the Death Race, where he is given a repurposed muscle car and told to win the race or die trying.
As the race progresses, Jensen must contend with a number of obstacles and opponents, including the ruthless and sadistic champion, Frankenstein. He also forms alliances with other inmates, including the intelligent and resourceful Coach, as they attempt to outwit the prison's security measures and survive each brutal stage of the race.
Meanwhile, on the outside, Jensen's wife is being threatened by the real killers, who are after a key piece of evidence that can clear Jensen's name. As the climactic race draws near, Jensen must not only fight for his life in the arena, but also fight to protect his family from those who wish them harm.
