Death and the Maiden is a 1994 psychological thriller film directed by Roman Polanski, based on the play of the same name by Ariel Dorfman. The story takes place in an unnamed South American country, which is recovering from the end of a dictatorship. The protagonist, Paulina Escobar (played by Sigourney Weaver), is a political activist who was kidnapped and tortured by members of the former regime. Her husband, Gerardo (played by Stuart Wilson), is a lawyer who has been tasked with investigating the human rights abuses of the former regime.

One stormy night, Paulina hears a car pass by and believes that it has stopped outside her house. She becomes convinced that the driver is the man who once tortured her for the government, and she decides to take matters into her own hands. She ties up the man, Dr. Roberto Miranda (played by Ben Kingsley), and questions him about his past. The film takes place entirely within Paulina's house and primarily consists of conversations between the three characters.

As the night goes on, tensions rise, and it becomes increasingly unclear whether Roberto is, in fact, the man who tortured Paulina. Gerardo arrives home and tries to convince his wife to release Roberto, arguing that it is not fair to punish an innocent man. However, Paulina is adamant that Roberto is guilty and continues to torture him to elicit a confession.

The film explores themes of trauma, revenge, and justice, as well as the reliability of memory and the nature of truth. The ending is left ambiguous, leaving it up to the viewer to decide whether Paulina has found closure or perpetuated a cycle of violence.
