Dear John is a 2010 American romantic drama film directed by Lasse Hallström, based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The movie stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried in lead roles.

Sergeant John Tyree (Channing Tatum) is a soldier in the United States Army, who is on leave from Germany. He meets Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) on the beach, and they immediately hit it off. Savannah is a college student who is in town to volunteer with a local charity organization.

The two spend time together, and John shows Savannah around his hometown and introduces her to his father, who has Asperger's syndrome. John and Savannah soon fall in love, but their time together is cut short when John has to return to Germany.

While he is away, they write letters to each other, and their love blossoms. However, when John's father gets sick, he is forced to come back home. John and Savannah are reunited, but their happiness is short-lived when John receives news that he has to go back to Germany.

Savannah is torn apart by the news, and the two decide to make a difficult decision about their future. John has to choose between staying in the military or being with Savannah. He ultimately decides to re-enlist, and the two exchange tearful goodbyes.

Over the next few years, they continue to write letters to each other, but their love starts to fade as they both move on with their lives. John is injured in combat and returns home, where he seeks comfort from Savannah, who is now married with children.

In the end, John realizes that he needs to let go of his past and move on with his life. He writes a letter to Savannah, in which he expresses his gratitude for their time together and his hope for her and her family's happiness. The movie ends with John watching Savannah and her family from afar, content with the knowledge that she is happy.
