Dead Ringers is a psychological thriller directed by David Cronenberg and released in 1988. The film stars Jeremy Irons as Elliot and Beverly Mantle, the identical twin gynecologists. The story is loosely based on the lives of real-life twin doctors, Stewart and Cyril Marcus.
The movie follows the lives of the Mantle twins who share a deep bond and are inseparable. Elliot is charming, confident and skilled in his profession, while Beverly is shy, introverted and more reserved. Elliot uses this to his advantage to seduce his patients and move on to the next once he loses interest. Beverly is always there to clean up the mess.
One day, a beautiful actress named Claire Niveau (played by Geneviève Bujold) comes to see Elliot for a consultation. Beverly is smitten with her but is too timid to make a move. Elliot sees this as an opportunity to have an affair with Claire and then pass her on to Beverly.
As the affair progresses, Beverly falls deeply in love with Claire while Elliot loses interest. But things take a dark turn when Claire discovers Elliot's true identity and breaks off the affair. Beverly is devastated and becomes increasingly unstable, slipping into a state of madness.
As Beverly's mental state deteriorates, Elliot tries to take control of the situation, leading to a shocking and tragic climax.
