Dead Calm is a psychological thriller movie released in 1989. The movie is directed by Phillip Noyce and stars Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill, and Billy Zane in lead roles.

The story begins with John Ingram (Sam Neill) and his wife Rae Ingram (Nicole Kidman) setting sail on a yacht to forget about the tragic loss of their son in a car accident. While on the open sea, they come across a drifting ship named "Orpheus," and soon discover a survivor, Hughie Warriner (Billy Zane), on board.

Hughie tells the couple that he was the only survivor of a horrible act of violence which occurred on board, and that the rest of the crew perished. John decides to investigate the situation and leaves Rae on the yacht with Hughie.

As John investigates, he discovers that Hughie has been lying, and his true intentions are to steal their yacht and leave them stranded on the Orpheus. Meanwhile, Rae realizes that Hughie is not who he claims to be, and a cat and mouse game begins between the two.

The tension reaches a climax in the finale as Rae must use her ingenuity to try and outsmart Hughie and save herself and her husband from his plans. A stunning twist in the story reveals that Hughie is not alone on the ship and the survivors are not who they seem to be.
