Joe Clay, played by Jack Lemmon, is an advertising executive and a heavy drinker. He meets and falls in love with a secretary named Kirsten Arnesen, played by Lee Remick, who is initially hesitant to indulge in Joe's drinking habits but eventually becomes addicted herself.
