Days of Thunder is a 1990 American sports action drama film directed by Tony Scott, produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and starring Tom Cruise, Robert Duvall, and Nicole Kidman. The film follows the story of Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise), a talented but unproven stock car driver who gets a break when he is recruited by veteran car owner Tim Daland (Randy Quaid) to drive for his team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Trickle's driving style is aggressive and daring, causing him to clash with fellow racer Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker), who is also his teammate. Trickle begins a rivalry with Burns that leads to a high-speed crash during a race. Both drivers suffer serious injuries and Trickle's career is threatened.
With the help of his doctor, Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman), and his team manager Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall), Trickle overcomes his physical injuries and returns to the track. He also learns to control his reckless driving style and develops a romantic interest in Lewicki.
Trickle and Burns eventually face off in the Daytona 500, with Trickle emerging victorious after a thrilling race. The film concludes with Trickle and Lewicki getting together and Trickle announcing his retirement from racing.
Days of Thunder was a commercial success at the box office, earning over $157 million worldwide. While it received mixed reviews from critics, it has become a cult classic among racing fans and is widely regarded as one of the best racing films ever made.
