In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most of the human population into vampires, creating a new societal structure where the vampire race dominates over a dwindling human population. The remaining humans are used as a blood source, farmed and harvested by the vampires for their sustenance.
The story follows Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke), a hematologist working for a major pharmaceutical company that specializes in finding a blood substitute that can sustain vampires without the need for human blood. Edward is approached by a group of humans led by Audrey Bennett (Claudia Karvan), who seek his help in finding a cure for vampirism.
With the help of his vampire friend, Lionel (Willem Dafoe), Edward discovers a way to reverse the effects of vampirism by using his blood substitute as a catalyst for a cure. However, the corrupt leader of the vampire race, Charles Bromley (Sam Neill), and his enforcer, Francis (Vince Colosimo), will stop at nothing to prevent the cure from becoming public, as it would mean the end of their dominance over humankind.
As Edward and his allies work to spread the cure, they must fight against Bromley and his forces, culminating in a tense showdown as both sides race to decide the fate of humanity. Daybreakers combines action, suspense, and a unique take on the vampire genre to create an exciting and thought-provoking adventure.
