After the events of the previous film, a simian flu has wiped out most of humanity. Caesar (Andy Serkis), the intelligent ape who led a rebellion against humans, now leads a community of apes in the Muir Woods. The apes have not seen a human in years and believe they are extinct.
Meanwhile, a group of human survivors, led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke), encounter the apes while searching for a hydroelectric dam in the woods. Despite initial tensions, the humans and apes agree to a truce, with Malcolm promising to repair the dam to provide power to the apes in exchange for access to the dam's generator.
However, tensions rise between the two groups as humans and apes struggle to coexist peacefully. Koba (Toby Kebbell), an ape who was mistreated by humans, begins to distrust Caesar's leadership and leads a group of apes to attack the humans. As the conflict escalates, both sides prepare for war.
Meanwhile, a team of scientists in San Francisco, including Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), struggle to find a cure for the simian flu while also dealing with dwindling resources and a rising sense of hopelessness.
The film ultimately culminates in a dramatic battle between the human survivors and the ape community, with Caesar and Malcolm fighting to protect their respective clans. In the end, peace is restored, but at a great cost.
