After his lab is destroyed, Dr. Peyton Westlake (played by Liam Neeson) is left for dead. However, he survives and undergoes a groundbreaking medical process that is supposed to repair his damaged nerve endings and skin. Unfortunately, the procedure only lasts for a short time before the synthetic skin begins to disintegrate, leaving Peyton disfigured and in constant pain.
As he recuperates, Peyton is consumed by a desire for revenge against his attackers - a ruthless gang of criminals led by Robert G. Durant (played by Larry Drake). He begins to use his newly acquired skills, including his ability to create new identities by impersonating other people, to take on the gang and bring them to justice.
As the movie progresses, Peyton grapples with the toll his quest for vengeance is taking on his mental and physical health. He becomes increasingly violent and unstable, driven by a need to reclaim his former life with his girlfriend, attorney Julie Hastings (played by Frances McDormand).
Ultimately, Peyton's attempts to destroy the gang and regain his identity lead to a violent confrontation that puts him and his loved ones in danger. He must rely on his ingenuity and resourcefulness to survive and triumph over his enemies.
