Dark Waters is a legal thriller drama film based on the true story of Robert Bilott, a corporate defense attorney turned environmental activist who took on the DuPont company for knowingly polluting water sources. Mark Ruffalo plays the lead role of Bilott, while Anne Hathaway plays his wife, Sarah.
The film opens with Bilott working as a successful corporate defense attorney in Cincinnati, Ohio. One day, a farmer from his hometown, Parkersburg, West Virginia, approaches him with a video depicting the strange behavior of his cows. The cows were dying after consuming water from a nearby stream, which had turned toxic.
Bilott reluctantly takes on the case to investigate the situation and uncovers a large number of similar cases of unexplained deaths in the area.
