Dark Shadows is a 2012 horror-comedy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as the vampire Barnabas Collins. The movie is based on the popular American Gothic soap opera of the same name that aired on television from 1966 to 1971.
In the film, Barnabas Collins is accidentally released from his coffin after being buried alive for nearly two centuries. He returns to his ancestral home, Collinwood Manor, in Collinsport, Maine, only to find that his family has fallen into ruin. The Collins family's once prosperous fishing business has been taken over by a rival company, and the family's grand mansion is now dilapidated and overrun by the dysfunctional members of the Collins family.
Barnabas sets out to restore the family's fortunes and reputation, but faces numerous obstacles in his quest. He has to deal with the witch, Angelique Bouchard (played by Eva Green), who has been waiting for his return and has cursed the Collins family for generations. Barnabas also has to navigate the complicated relationships and household dynamics of the Collins family, which includes matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer), her brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller), and her rebellious teen daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Grace Moretz).
As Barnabas tries to put things back in order, he finds himself becoming increasingly drawn to the family's new governess, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote), who bears a striking resemblance to his lost love from the 18th century. The two begin a forbidden romance, but Angelique's obsession with Barnabas threatens to destroy everything he has worked so hard to reclaim.
Dark Shadows is a campy, humorous take on the original Gothic soap opera, with Tim Burton's signature visual style and Johnny Depp's eccentric performance as Barnabas. Despite mixed reviews, the film was a moderate commercial success and has gained a cult following in the years since its release.
