When Harry Dalton (played by Pierce Brosnan), a volcanologist trained at the United States Geological Survey, arrives in the small town of Dante's Peak, he is called upon by the local mayor (played by Linda Hamilton) to investigate some recent seismic activity around the dormant volcano that the town is situated on. Harry, who is still reeling from a catastrophic volcanic disaster that occurred at his previous post, Yellowstone National Park, is initially skeptical about the seriousness of the situation. However, as he begins to gather data about the volcano, he starts to realize that the magma pressure is building up dangerously fast and an eruption is imminent.
Despite Harry's warnings, the town's annual festival brings an influx of tourists who are unaware of the impending danger. When the volcano finally erupts, Harry must navigate treacherous terrain and overcome the town's lack of preparedness to save as many lives as possible. He helps the mayor and her family, along with several other townspeople, escape the volatile eruption of ash, lava, and pyroclastic flows that decimates Dante's Peak. Along the way, Harry's scientific skills are put to the test as he employs his knowledge of volcanology and quick thinking to keep the group alive.
The group of survivors end up stranded on a lake, waiting for rescue as they run out of supplies. With the volcano still raging and aftershocks complicating their already dire situation, the group must come together to evade further danger and find a way to be rescued.
Dante's Peak received mixed reviews upon its release in 1997, but was praised for its thrilling disaster scenes, excellent performances from the cast, and for its portrayal of the scientific process and the importance of paying heed to early warnings in a disaster situation.
