Dance of the Forty One

Drama  Mexico

Dance of the Forty One is a Mexican historical drama film directed by David Pablos. The story is based on a true scandalous event that took place in 1901 in Mexico City.

The movie follows the life of a prominent politician named Ignacio de la Torre y Mier, who is secretly gay. Ignacio is married to Amada Diaz, the daughter of the president of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz. Although he is married, Ignacio frequents a secret club known as the "Dance of the Forty-One," where he meets and cavorts with other gay men.

Ignacio's secret life is exposed when the police raid the club, and he is arrested along with 41 other men. The scandal becomes a national issue, and the president's daughter is humiliated by her husband's behavior. Ignacio is forced to resign from his political position, and his family disowns him.

The film explores the themes of sexuality, morality, social norms, and political power during a time when homosexuality was considered a taboo in Mexico. The director portrays the hypocrisy of the society that condemns and punishes people who act differently from the norm.

Dance of the Forty One features an impressive ensemble cast, including Alfonso Herrera, Emiliano Zurita, Mabel Cadena, and Elizabeth Esguerra. The movie was released on May 12, 2021, and received positive reviews for its performances, direction, and storytelling.
