After being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, Ron Woodroof (played by Matthew McConaughey) becomes frustrated with the lack of effective medical treatments available in the US and starts smuggling unapproved drugs from around the world. He teams up with a transgender woman named Rayon (played by Jared Leto) to create the "Dallas Buyers Club," a club that provides access to these drugs for a membership fee.
Despite opposition from the FDA and the medical establishment, the Dallas Buyers Club becomes a successful business venture and helps thousands of people with HIV/AIDS who were previously denied access to effective treatments. Along the way, Woodroof's initial homophobic and bigoted attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community are challenged and he develops a close bond with Rayon.
The film was critically acclaimed for its performances (McConaughey and Leto both won Oscars for their roles) and its portrayal of the struggles faced by HIV/AIDS patients during the height of the epidemic in the 1980s. It also sparked conversations about the need for greater access to affordable healthcare and the ongoing stigma faced by those living with HIV/AIDS.
