John (played by John C. Reilly) is a lonely and depressed divorcee who is struggling to move on from his failed marriage. He lives alone in his apartment with his unfulfilling job as a freelance editor and has almost no social life.
One day, John's ex-wife Jamie (played by Catherine Keener) invites him to a party where he meets a woman named Molly (played by Marisa Tomei). The two hit it off immediately and start dating. However, John soon discovers that Molly's adult son Cyrus (played by Jonah Hill) is extremely possessive of his mother and doesn't like sharing her attention.
As John tries to build a relationship with Molly, Cyrus becomes increasingly hostile towards him, sabotaging their dates and trying to drive John away. John becomes paranoid and tries to uncover Cyrus' real intentions, leading to a tense power struggle between the two men.
As the situation escalates, John realizes that Cyrus is more than just a clingy son and is actually emotionally manipulative and dangerous. In the end, John must decide whether to fight for the woman he loves or back away and let Cyrus have his way.
