Cyrano de Bergerac is a 17th-century French nobleman and poet who is in love with his cousin Roxanne. However, he is convinced that his unattractive appearance will prevent him from winning her heart. Roxanne, meanwhile, falls in love with the handsome but dull-witted Christian, who lacks Cyrano's verbal dexterity.
Realizing that Christian cannot express his love to Roxanne in any meaningful way, Cyrano agrees to help him by writing love letters to Roxanne on his behalf. Roxanne is impressed by the letters and falls deeper in love with Christian, unaware that Cyrano is the true author.
