Bill Dancer is a small-time con artist who is taking care of a young girl named Curly Sue. They are homeless and often resort to scamming people to get by. Their latest scam involves pretending to be hit by cars, and they target Grey Ellison, a wealthy executive. Grey falls for their act and takes them to her luxurious apartment.
Grey's fiancé, Walker McCormick, is less than thrilled with the sudden appearance of Bill and Curly Sue. He immediately sees through their con and wants them gone. But Grey, who is struggling with her own issues, feels a connection to the two and offers to take them in temporarily.
As Bill and Curly Sue settle into Grey's apartment, they begin to grow fond of one another. Bill starts to realize that he wants more for Curly Sue than a life of scamming and poverty. Grey, too, begins to see life differently as she spends time with the two.
The conflict comes to a head when Walker tries to have Bill arrested and Curly Sue taken away. But Grey finally stands up for herself and the two people who have touched her heart. In the end, Bill and Curly Sue are given a chance at a new life, and Grey finds a new purpose in hers.
