Crystal Swan is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Darya Zhuk. The film is set in Minsk, Belarus, in 1996 and follows Velya, a young woman who dreams of moving to the United States to pursue her passion for music.
Velya spends her days working as a customs officer at the airport, but her nights are dedicated to DJing at local clubs. She dreams of one day moving to Chicago and believes that obtaining a U.S. visa is the key to making her dreams come true.
After submitting her visa application, Velya receives a call from the U.S. embassy in Minsk requesting that she provide a letter of invitation from an American citizen who will vouch for her. Desperate to obtain the letter, Velya tracks down an American named Scott through a local contact and convinces him to write her the letter.
However, when Velya travels to the embassy to submit the letter, she is informed that the phone line to the embassy has been cut and that the letter cannot be verified. With her dreams of moving to the U.S. crumbling before her, Velya takes matters into her own hands and travels to a small town in Belarus to find Scott and get the letter verified.
Along the way, Velya encounters a variety of characters, including a group of misfits who invite her to stay in their makeshift hostel and a young girl who she bonds with over a shared love of music.
As Velya navigates the bureaucratic obstacles and personal challenges in her path, she confronts the reality of her dreams and the sacrifices that come with pursuing them.
