Jack Manfred is a struggling writer who takes up a job as a croupier in a casino to make ends meet. Being an observer, Jack is fascinated by the world of gambling and the thrill it provides to its patrons. As he becomes more involved in the world of the casino, he discovers that everything in life is a gamble and that the gamblers are bound to lose.
As Jack learns the ins and outs of the casino world, he begins to use it as a source of inspiration for his novel. However, his involvement in the casino lifestyle starts to take a toll on his personal relationships and his ability to write. He becomes emotionally detached from his girlfriend and starts to have an affair with his fellow croupier, Bella.
