Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a 2000 martial arts film directed by Ang Lee and based on the novel by Wang Dulu. The film is set in 18th century China and follows the story of two legendary warriors, Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-fat) and Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), who are in pursuit of a powerful sword that has been stolen.
Their pursuit leads them to a young nobleman's daughter, Jen Yu (Zhang Ziyi), who is at a crossroads in her life. Despite being engaged to marry a wealthy man, Jen yearns for adventure and a life less restricted by social conventions. Li and Yu quickly discover that Jen is not as innocent as she seems, and that she is involved with the notorious thief, Lo (Chang Chen).
As the plot progresses, secrets are revealed, and the characters' desires for love, loyalty, and honor are put to the test. The film features stunning martial arts sequences choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, and beautifully shot landscapes showcasing the natural beauty of China.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon received critical acclaim and earned multiple awards, including four Academy Awards. It is regarded as a classic in the wuxia (martial arts/fantasy) genre and is seen as a milestone in the representation of Asian culture in Hollywood.
