Eddie (played by Richard Pryor) is a smooth-talking con artist who always manages to talk his way out of trouble. But when he is framed for a crime he didn't commit, he finds himself in court facing a long prison sentence. In a desperate bid for freedom, he claims to be insane and is sent to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
While undergoing tests, a powerful thunderstorm knocks out the electricity to the hospital, causing confusion and panic among the staff. In the darkness, Eddie is mistaken for a doctor and he decides to go along with it. Before he knows it, he is in charge of the entire hospital.
With his quick wit and fast talking, Eddie manages to bluff his way through a series of hilarious and dangerous situations, as he tries to keep his true identity a secret. Along the way, he becomes embroiled in a love triangle with a beautiful nurse (played by Rachel Ticotin) and the hospital's resident psychiatrist (played by Rubén Blades).
As the storm intensifies, Eddie's lies begin to unravel and he must use all his cunning to avoid being exposed. With the help of his unlikely allies, he hatches a daring plan to escape from the hospital before it's too late.
