Deceptive Shadows on Film

Horror,Thriller  United States of America

Creep is a found footage horror film directed by Patrick Brice and co-written by Brice and Mark Duplass, who also stars in the film. Aaron, played by Brice himself, is a freelance video editor living in Los Angeles. He responds to a Craigslist ad that offers $1,000 for a one-day job of filming a stranger.

Aaron arrives at a remote cabin in the woods and meets Josef (Duplass), a friendly but strange man in his mid-30s who claims to have cancer and wants to make a video diary for his unborn son. Josef's erratic behavior begins to disturb Aaron and he decides to leave, but Josef persuades him to stay by telling him a more personal and touching story about his pregnant wife who passed away.

The rest of the day is spent filming Josef as he acts increasingly bizarre and unsettling, including pretending to kill Aaron during a bathtub scene. During their dinner, Josef reveals he is not actually dying from cancer, but instead has a degenerative brain disease that is causing him to act in erratic and dangerous ways.

As the night progresses, Aaron becomes increasingly alarmed at Josef's behavior, especially when he discovers a wolf mask in Josef's closet, which Josef admits to using to scare hikers in the woods. Aaron confronts Josef, who becomes aggressive and chases him through the woods, before revealing his true intentions- to kill Aaron and take over his life, even suggesting that Aaron could take up the role of "Josef" and continue making video diaries.

Aaron is eventually able to escape and records the final moments of the encounter, as Josef chases him down with an axe. The film ends with Aaron at home, watching through the footage he had taken and hearing Josef's final haunting words to him.

Overall, Creep is a tense and suspenseful film that keeps audiences guessing as to what will happen next. Duplass's performance as Josef is both charming and deeply unsettling, making for a truly terrifying experience. The film's low-budget found footage style also contributes to the sense of realism and immediacy. The film was successful enough to warrant a sequel, Creep 2, which was released in 2017.
