The movie takes place in a desolate area of south Texas, near the Mexican border, where the Rio Grande separates the two countries. The boarding house that Teresa and Ester run is situated on the edge of the lake and is only accessible by boat. It is a lonely and remote place, where outsiders rarely venture, except for the occasional drug-runner or human trafficker looking for a place to rest and hide from the authorities.
Teresa is a tough and resourceful woman who has been running the boarding house for years. She is skilled at blending in with the seedy characters who frequent the place and knows how to use their weaknesses against them. Ester, on the other hand, is more innocent and vulnerable, plagued by nightmares and guilt over the killings they commit.
Their routine of luring and killing the strangers who come to stay is interrupted when two cartel gangsters arrive, seeking refuge after a botched drug deal. The men, who call themselves "Blackie" and "Raymond," are dangerous and unpredictable, and quickly take control of the boarding house.
Teresa tries to keep up her tough facade, but the men soon discover their secret stash of stolen money and drugs. As tensions escalate, Ester becomes drawn to one of the men, Raymond, and begins to question her mother's actions.
