Manny Singer is a successful advertising executive, but his life is turned upside down when his wife dies unexpectedly, leaving him to raise their 7-year-old daughter Molly alone. Molly becomes mute and withdrawn, refusing to speak to anyone until Corrina Washington enters their lives. Corrina is a sassy African-American housekeeper, who has a gift for talking to Molly and coaxing her out of her shell.
As Manny and Corrina begin to bond over their shared experiences as outsiders, they quickly become friends. Corrina introduces Manny and Molly to a whole new way of life, filled with laughter, music, and cultural experiences. This delights Molly, who begins to open up and express herself once again.
However, not everyone in the town approves of Manny and Corrina's friendship, and they face prejudice and discrimination from the other townspeople. Despite this, their bond continues to strengthen, and they learn valuable lessons about the importance of acceptance, love, and family.
The film stars Whoopi Goldberg as Corrina, Ray Liotta as Manny Singer, and Tina Majorino as Molly Singer. It was directed by Jessie Nelson and released in 1994.
