In Corridors of Blood, the British surgeon is named Dr. Thomas Bolton and he is portrayed by Boris Karloff. Dr. Bolton becomes obsessed with creating a painless surgical procedure and begins experimenting with various anesthetic gases, including ether and nitrous oxide. He becomes consumed by his work and neglects his family and patients, causing his wife and colleagues to become concerned about his well-being.
During a demonstration of his technique before a panel of physicians, Dr. Bolton accidentally administers too much gas to his patient and the man wakes up mid-operation, causing chaos in the operating room. This incident leads to Dr. Bolton being ostracized from the medical community and he is forced to seek out alternative methods to finance his research.
Desperate for funds, Dr. Bolton becomes involved with a criminal gang led by Black Ben (Christopher Lee) and his henchman Resurrection Joe (Basil Sydney). He begins providing them with his anesthetic gases to use during their robberies, but soon becomes addicted to the drugs himself.
As Dr. Bolton's addiction spirals out of control, his experiments become increasingly dangerous and he begins to neglect his patients, putting their lives in jeopardy. His wife and colleagues attempt to intervene, but he refuses to listen and continues down a dangerous path that can only lead to disaster.
Corridors of Blood was released in 1958 and is considered to be one of Boris Karloff's best performances. The film deals with themes of addiction, obsession, and the dangers of unchecked ambition.
