Corky Romano, played by Chris Kattan, is a veterinarian who is the black sheep of his family. When his father, Pops Romano, played by Peter Falk, is indicted on racketeering charges, he reaches out to Corky to help him. Corky is initially hesitant to get involved in his father's criminal activities, but he ultimately decides to go undercover in the FBI to destroy the evidence against his father.
Corky's lack of intelligence and ineptitude make it difficult for him to blend in with the competent FBI agents who are investigating his father's criminal activities. Corky's attempts to complete various tasks assigned to him by his handler, Agent Brick Davis, played by Peter Berg, result in a series of comedic mishaps.
Along the way, Corky develops romantic feelings for a fellow FBI agent, Kate Russo played by Vinessa Shaw, complicating his mission further. Corky manages to bumble his way through the investigation, and ultimately succeeds in destroying the evidence against his father.
