Coppelia is a ballet that was first premiered in 1870 in Paris, France. It was choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon and its music was composed by Leo Delibes. The story of Coppelia is based on the tale "The Sandman" by E.T.A. Hoffman.
The ballet is set in a small town where the eccentric Doctor Coppelius lives. He is a reclusive inventor and a skilled mechanic who has been working on his latest creation, a life-sized automaton named Coppelia. The town's youth, including Franz, a local boy, are fascinated by Doctor Coppelius' work and eagerly gather outside his workshop to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Coppelia.
Swanilda, Franz's fiancé, is jealous of his fascination with Coppelia and decides to venture into Doctor Coppelius' workshop to discover the truth. There, she discovers that Coppelia is not a real woman but a doll, and that Doctor Coppelius plans to use Franz's heart to bring her to life.
With the help of her friends, Swanilda hatches a plan to save Franz from Doctor Coppelius' grasp. She disguises herself as Coppelia and manages to deceive Doctor Coppelius long enough to rescue Franz and escape. In the end, Doctor Coppelius realizes his mistake and the townspeople celebrate by holding a grand wedding for Swanilda and Franz.
Coppelia is known for its comic and playful choreography, its use of pantomime, and its enchanting score. It has become a beloved classic of the ballet world and is still performed by companies worldwide.
