John Constantine is a cynical, chain-smoking, British occult detective who is known for his abilities to see and communicate with spirits and demons. He has spent most of his life in exile from the church, where he was originally trained as an exorcist. Constantine's life takes a turn when he is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and realizes that his soul is damned to Hell for committing suicide as a teenager.
When Angela Dodson's twin sister Isabel commits suicide, she begins to investigate and suspects that her sister was murdered. She seeks out Constantine’s help, believing his expertise on the supernatural can assist with the case. Despite his initial reluctance, Constantine joins Angela and together they delve into a world of demons and angels to uncover the truth about Isabel's death.
As they investigate, their journey takes them through a diverse range of supernatural settings, from the decrepit tunnels of the Los Angeles subway system to the seedy nighttime clubs where the devil's disciples congregate. Along the way, the pair encounters a variety of otherworldly beings, including Balthazar, a powerful demon who is seeking to claim Isabel's soul for Satan, and Gabriel, an androgynous angel who is looking to complete a divine prophesy.
Despite numerous challenges and setbacks, Constantine and Angela ultimately discover that Isabel's death was indeed murder, and they are able to put her spirit to rest. Along the way, Constantine is able to gain a measure of redemption for his past sins by making a sacrifice that allows him to earn his way back into God's grace. Despite the danger that looms over every corner of the occult world, Constantine continues to walk the line between life and death, as he keeps looking for ways to make amends for his past mistakes.
