Conrack is a 1974 drama film directed by Martin Ritt. It is based on the autobiographical novel The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy, which tells the story of Conroy's experiences teaching at an isolated island school in the 1960s. The film stars Jon Voight as Conroy.
The film follows the story of Pat Conroy, a young teacher who is assigned to the isolated island of Yamacraw off the coast of South Carolina. The island is populated mostly by poor black families, and the children there are basically illiterate and neglected. Conroy is initially met with resistance by the island's inhabitants, who are suspicious of him and his intentions.
Despite this, Conroy begins to teach the children, introducing them to the wider world and their place in it.
