Conquest of Space is a 1955 science fiction film directed by Byron Haskin and starring Walter Brooke, Eric Fleming, and Mickey Shaughnessy. The film follows a team of American astronauts as they embark on a dangerous mission to Mars, but soon encounter a series of challenges that threaten their success and their lives.
The mission is led by Captain Barney Merritt, a deeply religious man who believes that the mission is part of God's plan. However, as the crew makes their way towards Mars, Merritt's beliefs begin to clash with the realities of space travel. He becomes increasingly anxious and distant, fearing that the mission may bring him into conflict with his faith.
The other members of the crew, including his co-pilot Brant, try to help him come to terms with his fears, but they soon face other problems. The ship's navigation system malfunctions, and they are forced to take a dangerous detour through an asteroid field. They also encounter strange alien life forms on the surface of Mars, and must fight for their survival against these hostile creatures.
As the mission continues, tensions rise between the crew members, and they must confront their own personal demons in order to make it back home safely. In the end, Merritt must reconcile his beliefs with the reality of the mission, and find a way to lead his crew to victory in the face of overwhelming odds.
