Connie and Carla are two best friends who work as lounge singers in a small club in Chicago. One night, they witness a mob boss killing a man in the club's kitchen. Fearing for their lives, they decide to flee the city and head to Los Angeles, where they hope to start a new life and pursue their dream of becoming famous performers.

In Los Angeles, they stumble upon a struggling gay drag queen act and decide to join them on stage. Reinventing themselves as "The King and I," they become a hit on the local drag circuit and attract the attention of club owner and talent scout, Stanley.

Despite their initial success, Connie and Carla's new life is threatened when the mob boss tracks them down and discovers their new identities. In order to keep their new life and hide from the mob, they must continue to perform in drag and keep their true identities a secret.

Complicating matters further is Connie's growing love interest in Jeff, a straight man who is attracted to her when she is performing as a man. As their relationship develops, Connie struggles with whether to reveal her true identity to Jeff or to continue living a double life.

In the end, Connie and Carla must face the consequences of their choices and decide what is most important to them: their safety, their careers, or their relationships.
