Connecting Rooms

Drama  United Kingdom

Connecting Rooms is a drama film directed by Franklin Gollings and released in 1970. The film follows the lives of various occupants of a run-down boarding house in London, owned by the strict and cynical Mrs. Brent.

The film opens with the introduction of busker Wanda Fleming, who has arrived at the boarding house to rent a room. She soon catches the eye of Mickey Hollister, a young pop songwriter, who is drawn to her beauty and talent. Wanda initially resists his advances, but ultimately gives in to his charm and begins a romantic relationship with him.

Meanwhile, former schoolmaster James Wallraven is struggling to cope with a recent accusation of pedophilia, which has shattered his career and reputation. He now works as a janitor in an art gallery and tries to avoid any contact with children or young people. However, his repressed desires and sense of isolation drive him to seek solace in a relationship with Miss Cooper, a lonely spinster who lives in the boarding house.

As the relationships between the characters unfold, they each confront their own demons and struggle to come to terms with their past and present circumstances. Wanda begins to question her own artistic aspirations and the value of her relationship with Mickey, while James faces the painful consequences of his past actions and the social stigma attached to his accusation.

Connecting Rooms is a poignant and evocative portrait of life in 1960s London, exploring themes of love, loneliness, and social exclusion against a backdrop of economic and political uncertainty. The film features a talented cast, including Bette Davis, Michael Redgrave, and Alexis Kanner, and offers a compelling glimpse into the human condition.
