The eight people embarking on the expedition into the Congo are led by Karen Ross, a telecommunications specialist, and Peter Elliot, a primatologist. Their mission is to find diamonds but they soon discover that the expedition is more perilous than they thought.
As they travel deeper into the Congo, they encounter a tribe of peaceful gorillas who have been taught sign language by Peter Elliot. However, they soon discover that there is a group of aggressive, genetically enhanced apes living in the jungle who will stop at nothing to protect their territory.
The team faces numerous challenges including treacherous terrain, deadly wildlife, and treacherous human adversaries. Along the way, they also uncover dark secrets about the abandoned research facility they are exploring.
As the team battles their way through the jungle, they face danger at every turn, with the killer apes threatening to wipe out the expedition. Will they survive the perils of the Congo and find what they are looking for, or will they fall victim to the dangers lurking in the jungle?
