Confidential Informant takes place in the mid 1980s during the height of the crack epidemic in Chicago. The story follows two narcotics agents, Moran and Thorton, who are on a mission to find the killer of their colleague, Detective Johnson. As they investigate possible leads, the partners begin to feel the pressure from their higher-ups to solve the case quickly.
Desperate for information, Moran and Thorton turn to a junkie informant named Stevie, who they have paid off in the past. Stevie tells them about a drug dealer named Hanks who may have had something to do with Johnson's murder.
Moran becomes obsessed with catching Hanks and decides to involve Stevie in a dangerous plan to set him up. Stevie agrees to help in exchange for money to provide for his wife and son. Despite Thorton's reservations, Moran presses forward with the plan and it quickly goes awry.
As the situation spirals out of control, Moran and Thorton find themselves under the scrutiny of a suspicious internal affairs agent named Buchanan. Their actions come under question, and they must fight to clear their names and solve the case before it's too late.
As tensions rise, the partners must confront their own ethics and the cost of the choices they have made in this gritty crime drama.
